The 172 in FSX may not be exactly on the numbers of a real 172, but good lord is it much more convincing to fly. And while I'm not saying the sound defines the aircraft, it's surprisingly important in flying, and I expected it to be modeled as such. It's just one sound file with the frequency varying based on throttle setting, resulting in a cheap, annoying, and unrealistic perception of engine speed. The sound alone is just hard to listen to. All I can say is that I am a private pilot, I've flown many Cessna 172s, and the X-Plane version is a poor excuse for creating the feeling you are in a Cessna. I really feel like I was taken for $60, and want to explain this to anyone who is wanting a reasonable sim to pilot around without spending additional money and time to bring even the most basic aspects up to speed. I just assumed the dynamic modeling would have been perfected over the years and carried into version 10 it just blew my mind this was X-Plane! Maybe someone snuck into my room, turned on my PC and tweaked all the settings, because right now I feel like I must look crazy for saying this, but on the other hand, maybe I'm like the kid in the "Emperor's New Clothing" pointing out that everyone else is nuts in believing this game correctly simulates flying and is a product worth spending money on. In X-Plane the harrier flew like it was about to stall at 280 kts, the Cessna would drift flat around a corner with rudder application like a car.
